  • About Me

    Hi there,
Hello families. I am better at face-to face interviews and meetings but I will do my best to impress. My name is Salam and I am a Toronto native. I was born in North York and raised in Scarborough and downtown and am the oldest in a BIG family. I grew up in a busy household full of soccer/hockey games/camp, cousins and food. I learned to adapt to changing schedules, juggling 2-4 things at the same time and having fun and being responsible at the same time. Being the 'big sis' also gave you practice at being the supply mom. I am fun, loving, patient, caring, sensitive and open-minded. I am a busy body and feel most comfortable when I am multitasking and active. I love the outdoors, sports (hockey/soccer/swimming/hiking/walking. whatever can get me outside and moving) and just exploring the city.
I know English, Arabic, French (need some practice for sure. ) And American Sign Language. I love travelling and getting to know new languages.. even if it's only a couple of phrases. I cater to my inner geek by looking up and knowing random science and space facts. I love anime and Star Trek/Star Wars and guiltily admit to it. I love cooking and creativity in the kitchen whether it's jazzing up a classic PB&J or making something elaborate. between you and me, I have an obsession with the Food, DIY and Arts&Crafts section on Pintrest. I also love down-time and relaxing reading a book to kids of with them kids go to bed and playing 'monsters' to get that last bit of energy out before they have a good night sleep. I don't take myself too seriously and I am not afraid of being silly and playing dress-up. It's healthy to laugh at yourself.
My career choices and path has always revolved around children and family care. I have had a wide range of experience with children from baby-sitting, program facilitation, to teaching and guidance. Working at Holland Bloorview Rehabilitation Hospital (right beside Sunnybrook Hospital) for over 5 years has exposed me to the large array of needs and preference to childcare, special needs and programming from ages 13 months - 17 yo. I have had extensive experience with children with special needs as well as their family and siblings who also need guidance and an extra hand. From developing fun activities and trips that are accessible to adapting those activities to integrate everyone. There is no game/activity/sport that can't have a twist on it to include everyone.
I have also had experience abroad with children from program development and teaching children/youth from ages 6-18 English and American Sign language at the Holyland Institute for the Deaf in Jordan, to designing, planning and coordinating activities, sports and trips of up to 45 children ages 4-17 in Barbados at the Pinelands Creative Workshop. I have also traveled with the families I work with on family vacations and trips, such as Europe, all over Canada (B. C. Northern Ontario and Quebec) to lend that extra hand a be part of the family. Additionally I have experience working with Camps such as the YMCA day camp and Northern Algonquin camps administering programs such the Arts & Crafts, Soccer, Outdoor Education, and the Canoe and Wildlife program.
With that said, I have had the opportunity for professional growth through trainings, courses and workshops during my employment. Some include but are not limited to; First Aid CPR and New-born first Aid and CPR - Non-Violent Crisis Intervention - Behavioural Management - Wildlife First Aid - American Sign Language - DONA international Doula Certificate I completed my Double BA at York in International Development Studies and Multicultural and Indigeneity Studies (also known as Race, Ethnicity and Indigeneity Studies). I also have two certificates in Community Arts Practice and Aboriginal Studies. My Academics included a lot of discourse about children's rights, psychology and mental health, and the environment and ecology. Through my certificates I learned hands on skills like game/skills development and conflict resolution training. I also have had exposure to community arts and workshop facilitation which makes it easier to take care of multiple children and do fun and creative activities. I hope I didn't kill your eyes with this essay. But if you think I am a good fit and we're made for each other contact me either through this website or personally: Good luck on your search.
    Many blessings,
    Salam
